The "contact lens" can also be implanted permanently in the eye. This can be done surgically under general anesthesia or under local anesthesia. The treatment is done under sterile conditions in a suitable operating room with the latest equipment. The treatment is done outpatient so you can go home the same day. The day after is the first check up, and after 6 weeks the other eye can be operated.

The treatment

Through a small incision on the upper side of the eye is opened. The Artisan lens is placed in the eye and is fixed on the iris. The lens lasts a lifetime. If at a later stage, cataract surgery required the Artisan lens is easy to remove. This treatment is most appropriate for higher aberrations: more than -8.00 diopters and above the +3.00 diopter, whether or not in combination with a cylinder. Normally, the visual acuity is improved by this treatment compared to the visual acuity prior to surgery.

Aftercare

On the evening after surgery, one tablet of Diamox has to be taken, this is to prevent any increase in eye pressure. The next day, a checkup is done, and the bandage is removed. For 4 weeks you may not rub the operated eye, you need to protect this during night by using an eye cup for 2 weeks. Physical exercise is not recommended for the first 2 weeks. You will receive the following information after implantation of the Artisan lens:

  • Overview of control appointments
  • Complete set drops, painkillers, Diamox and instruction (this will be settled with your health care provider)

With the aid of the Wave Light excimer laser  most abbreviations can be treated.

The principle is simple: with the help of a so called "flying spot"  the cornea will be accurately and computer guided polished in order to get the focal point back on the retina without the aid of tools.

The treatment

You will be placed on a very comfortable bed, after being instilled with anesthetic eye drops. A disposable eyelid spreader is positioned in order for you not being able to blink during treatment. Dr. Meurs explains exactly what happens during treatment. The treatment is completely painless.

Firstly, the upper layer of the cornea is loosened and then the laser is activated which will correct your eye disorder exactly. This happens fully computerized, the laser automatically corrects the eye movements (eye-tracker). The method used by Dr. Meurs is called PRK. The instruments used are sterile and single-use only (disposable).

Aftercare

Immediately after the treatment, a very thin contact lens is placed on the treated eye for protection. This should stay for five days and nights. After 5 days, the lens is removed during the check-up.

After the treatment you receive from us the following information:

  • Overview of control appointments
  • Complete set drops, painkillers and instruction (this will be settled with your health care provider)
  • Sunglasses

The examination aims to determine which treatment is the most suitable and desirable for you.

For an optimal measurement of your eyes it is important that you take out your contact lenses before the examination. Also before the treatment it is necessary that you take out your contact lenses.

For hard contact lenses, you need to wear your glasses for four weeks.

For soft contact lenses before you need to wear your glasses for two weeks.

Take your contacts with you to the research so you can put them back in when the investigation is completed.

All options will be discussed with you and your eyes are extensively investigated in order to achieve the desired results, namely to see without glasses or contacts.

The examination takes about 45 minutes.

If you opt for treatment you will receive a form in which you consent to the treatment that you will have.
